Appointment of Mr Glenn Stevens as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia

I am pleased to announce that His Excellency the Governor-General of Australia has appointed Mr Glenn Stevens as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia for a term of seven years commencing 21 December 2001.

Mr Stevens joined the Research Department of the Reserve Bank of Australia in 1980. He has held the position of Assistant Governor (Economic) since 1996 where he has been closely involved in providing advice to the Governor and the Board on economic matters.

Mr Stevens brings a wealth of central banking and international experience to the position of Deputy Governor. He was educated at Sydney University where he obtained a first class Honours Degree in Economics. In 1985, Mr Stevens also received a Master of Arts (Economics) from the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Mr Stevens is also a member of the Advisory Boards of the Melbourne Institute for Applied Economic and Social Research and the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research.

He has written a number of highly regarded articles on monetary policy and a wide range of other economic matters. He was born in 1958 and is married with two children.

Mr Stevens replaces Dr Stephen Grenville whose term as Deputy Governor ended on 30 November 2001. Dr Grenville served as Deputy Governor and a member of the Reserve Bank Board for five years and has made a valuable contribution to public policy in Australia in the past thirty years.
