$15 Million Grant for National Sports Museum at the MCG

The Government announces today a $15 million grant in 2005-06 to help establish the National Sports Museum at the MCG.

The National Sports Museum will showcase and celebrate the achievements and values of Australian sport. It will protect and preserve the nation's sporting heritage.

It will be the permanent home of:

  • The Sport Australia Hall of Fame
  • Australian Gallery of Sport and Olympic Museum
  • Australian Cricket Hall of Fame
  • The Melbourne Cricket Club Museum

The National Sports Museum will be located at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as the centrepiece feature located at the entrance to the new Olympic stand.

The museum will be a national focal point for achievements in sport, and a focal point for values in sport, in particular the notion that the pursuit of excellence at the highest levels is consistent with a commitment to fair play.

It will serve as an inspiration to the youth of Australia to be active, set goals and achieve them.

The Melbourne Cricket Club will manage the National Sports Museum. An Advisory Board will be established from all stakeholders in the NSM to provide advice to the MCC on the strategy for the NSM.

The Museum will be completed in November 2007.
